Windsor – Detroit Corridor

June 18, 2026

“The Windsor–Detroit border is one of North America’s most important transportation corridors, often focused on freight, trade, and vehicle traffic. The Gordie Howe International Bridge, now complete but not yet open, has been central to this discussion as a way to expand commercial capacity. Its opening has been delayed while Canada and the United States finalize operational and regulatory details. While the bridge will strengthen economic ties, it has largely been framed around moving goods rather than people.

However, many people cross the border daily for work, education, healthcare, tourism, and social activities. In this context, the Windsor–Detroit Tunnel Bus plays a crucial and often underappreciated role in cross-border transportation. It provides one of the few practical options for travellers without access to a private vehicle. After being suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19 and discontinued in August 2025 by Transit Windsor, the service was quickly replaced by the private Linq Tunnel Bus. This ensured that cross-border mobility remained available and accessible.

The Tunnel Bus continues to be an affordable and convenient option for short trips between the two cities. While alternatives like FlixBus exist, they operate less frequently and are less suited to everyday travel. Looking ahead, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will include a pedestrian and cycling path, adding new travel options. Together, these services highlight the potential for a more balanced transportation network. Ultimately, the corridor’s success should be measured not just by goods movement, but by how well it connects people, with the Tunnel Bus playing a key role.”
