My passport is expired. Can I still cross the border?

If you are a U.S. citizen returning to the United States: Yes, you can generally re-enter the U.S. with an expired passport, though you may face delays and additional screening to verify your citizenship.  For more information please visit: https://www.cbp.gov

If you are a Canadian citizen returning to Canada: Yes, you can typically re-enter Canada with proof of citizenship (such as an expired passport, birth certificate, or citizenship card), but be prepared for extra screening at the border.  For more information please visit: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca

If you are entering the other country (for example, a Canadian citizen entering the U.S. or a U.S. citizen entering Canada): No, you generally need a valid passport or approved travel document.  An expired passport will result in being denied entry.

Important: Always check the latest official border crossing requirements before you travel, as rules can change.
